7 Fun Facts About Me

Photo by Braydon Anderson on Unsplash

Let’s get to know each other better. Here are some fun facts about me:

(#1) My first car was a “hoopty” I named Bruno. It was a 1970 something, mud brown muscle car. There was no air conditioner, heat flowed from the floorboard, the windows would get stuck if you rolled them all the way down and the ceiling pilings fell on your shoulders like snowflakes. But I had a ride.

(#2) I was a member of the Navy ROTC in high school. I learned quickly that the military life wasn’t for me. I fainted from standing at attention for an hour.

(#3) I learned all the moves to Janet Jackson’s “What Have You Done for Me Lately” and “Pleasure Principle” videos. I spent hours watching the videos on repeat.

(#4) I lived my football dreams by playing in the Ludy Bowl at Columbia College. I was a wide receiver. Didn’t score a touchdown but I did pick up a first down.

(#5) I love playing NBA 2K on my cell phone. We bought an Xbox for the kids and I played it more than they did.

(#6) To get over my first heartbreak, I played “Careless Whisper” by George Michael on repeat. For an entire week. I made an entire cassette tape of that one song by recording it off the radio.

(#7) Favorite boy band: New Edition. We’re the same age and I just knew I would meet and marry Ronnie DeVoe one day.

Now it’s your turn. In the comments, share a fun fact about you.

National Selfie Day

Here’s a fun holiday. Let’s all join in and post those selfie that you take everyday of the year. Today, it’s official. Here is my favorite selfie:

Please post your selfies below.

National Splurge Day

Time for another obscure holiday and it’s a good one. National Splurge Day means you can let loose and indulge in the one thing you’ve been missing. Counting calories? Have that dessert. On a budget? Go out to eat. It’s officially the day to do it.

Me? I’m going to buy the hard copy of this book.

This is the sequel to “A Conspiracy of Stars”, a wonderful YA sci-fi fantasy book that I read last year. I’ve been putting off buying it but today is splurge day so I must buy it. (Like I really need a reason to buy books. You should see my overflowing bookcases.:-)

What are you planning to do on National Splurge Day?

Turning 50: A Reflection on 10 Things I Know For Sure

Now that I’ve turned 50 years old, there are certain things I know for sure. The list stops at ten things because nobody has time to read a list of 50 things.

  • You’re never too old to follow your dreams.
  • Body parts can predict the weather.
  • Go to therapy. Mental health is as important as physical health.
  • Don’t start none, won’t be none.
  • Take pictures. You can never have enough pictures of your loved ones.
  • Buy in bulk. Warehouse stores are a blessing.
  • Do the thing that scares you. Step out of your comfort zone.
  • Travel outside of your city, state or country. The world is full of treasures and you need to experience a world view that is different than yours.
  • I can no longer “squat” in public restrooms. I’m officially a “double liner”. My knees thank me.
  • The series finale of Games of Thrones was trash!

So, tell me dear reader. What are some things you know for sure?

Eight Track Tape/Cassette Day

In honor of Eight Track /Cassette Tape Day, I’m going to list the albums of my childhood. I’m at the age where I can remember eight-track tapes, but too young to own any. So, this will be a reflection of those cassettes or vinyl albums I owned and enjoyed.

  • Candy Girl – New Edition
  • Street Songs – Rick James
  • Meeting in the Ladies Room – Klymaxx
  • Whitney Houston – Whitney Houston
  • New Edition – New Edition
  • All for Love – New Edition
  • Thriller – Michael Jackson
  • All This Love – Debarge
  • In A Special Way – Debarge
  • II – Boyz II Men
  • Mary Jane Girls – Mary Jane Girls
  • Rapture – Anita Baker

Before the days of digital downloads, can you name an album you owned on vinyl or cassette?

National Sibling Day – April 10, 2019

Every woman needs a sister and I’m lucky enough to have two. So, on this National Sibling Day, I want to give a shout out to my two siblings. You guys made growing up fun and make adulting tolerable.

No Housework Day – April 7, 2019

On the scale of obscure holidays, I love this one. It should be a national holiday complete with time off and freaking greeting cards. Who wouldn’t love a day off NOT to do housework?

But I guess you can technically do this any old day you want. In fact, I did this yesterday.

Today I am official though. Happy No Housework Day to everyone!

How do you plan to spend your housework free day?

Playoffs? We Talking About the Playoffs?

Kobe Bryant’s not walking through that door!

If you’re talking about the NBA Playoffs and the Los Angeles Lakers, the answer is a resounding “Nope”.

I know I’m in the minority here, but I wasn’t a big proponent of the Lakers signing LeBron James. I know he’s arguably the best player in the NBA. But I wanted the Lakers to let the young players grow. Show patience and add a free agent or two without sacrificing the young core. Of course, Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka had other ideas.

What do I know? I’ve only been a fan of the NBA and the Lakers since my Dad introduced me to the team back in the ’80s. I grew up on the Showtime Lakers. Cheered during the Kobe and Shaq years. LA is used to winning teams.  It’s hard for me to watch my once beloved team being mismanaged like this.

All good things come to an end and it was time to rebuild.  However, getting LeBron changes the dynamic of the team. Maybe that’s a good thing.

Playoffs? Not this year.

What do you think the Lakers should do? Trade the young players? Pursue Anthony Davis and other free agents? Fire the coach?

Shout out in the comment section.
